The Grove and LA's Farmer's Market
Posted on August 04, 2010 by David Leazenby
A visit to LA is not complete without sampling something at the Farmer's Market at 3rd & Fairfax. While most every major American city has a market of some type, this one in the Fairfax District is historic landmark complete with over 100 vendors of fresh vegetables, seafood, meats, sit-down eateries, watering holes and specialty foodie-type items. Now in its 76th year, it is an institution in the city; but the market wasn't always so well attended. In 2002, Caruso Affiliated opened up the adjacent shopping destination, The Grove, which includes a 14-screen theater, Nordstrom, Banana Republic, Apple Store, and a host of restaurants. It's easy to walk between the market and the Grove and it's designed as if they have always existed together. Caruso included a trolley to make the transition even more seamless.
The design of the pedestrian-only, narrow streets force you inward offering a respite from the usual wide LA boulevards. It clearly works as it was packed this Wednesday evening. Caruso reports that 20 million people visit the Grove annually: That’s higher attendance than Disneyland, at 14 million.
